On April 26, 1990, the local media said that all of the stone lanterns installed on both sides of the “Miyuki-doro (= the street for the Imperial visits)”, which is the approach road from Toyouke-daijingu (Geku) to the Kotaijingu (Naiku) in Ise, thrived as a pilgrimage town, which are organized by consultation of the road administrators (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport,・ Mie Prefecture, and Ise City) were to be removed by July 26th when the All Japan High School Physical Games will be held in Ise.
The reason is that on April 14, a rearview mirror of a route bus touched the copestone of a stone lantern which fell to the ground near the "Yamatohime-no-miya-mae" bus stop. Consequently, the fallen copestone struck a man, and led to his death by serious injury. Thus, the corresponding authorities decided that all stone lanterns should to be removed.
These stone lanterns were donated by the “Ise Sannomiya celebration donation party” about 50 years ago, by collecting donations from the patrons who venerated Ise Jingu (Ise Grand Shrine). As soon as the permission to occupy the road ceased to be continued, the party also broke up, after which the stone lanterns have continued a kind of "unlawful occupation" of which the owner cannot be identified.
However, these stone lanterns of the approach to the Kotaijingu (Naiku) of Ise Jingu have contributed to form the unique landscape of Shin-to-Ise (= Divine City of Ise). The essence of this streetscape is to guide people to shrine grounds, to worship the holy Sun Goddess Amaterasu-omikami, and support the prayer of people for eternal peace and prosperity of Japan and the world.
With modern technology, it is fully possible to provide the necessary security in combination with scenic aspects, as well as to reactivate their role as original lighting fixtures. One possibility is to make a lantern head from lightweight material. The other possibility is to install earthquake-resistant structures in the lanterns.
Thus, I sent the letters to the administrators, requesting as follows: "Do not remove all lanterns, first, discuss the issue carefully, and then, take measures that would make safety and landscape compatible". And I myself made a model with styro-foam, incorporating a solar power generator generation and LED lighting equipment. I submitted a request again to administrators with its articles of newspapers. I gave a presentation directly to the Mie Prefectural Road Administration Division about this model (I heard that the governor and deputy governor also t saw the model at hand. at a later date). I have asked the specialized styro-foam production company to increase the production prototype and paint. Also, I have asked a major general-construction-company to design a stone lantern reinforcement method for seismic isolation and earthquake resistance.
Then, I decided to establish a permanent foundation, for proposing and providing Ise stone lantern products and technologies that combine safety and landscape, for gathering financial resources from domestic and foreign people.
We can change that unfortunate accident into a blessing. We can restore the landscape that was made by about 500 stone lanterns had made. We can double the numbers and set up more than 1,000 lanterns twice as far.. We can arrange more than 10000 lanterns in the approach to Ise Jingu (Ise great shrine). with the prayer for eternal peace and prosperity of Japan and the world. We appreciate your support.
